True Sense of "Going Green"

We have all heard the phrase "Going Green" especially in the recent decade with the global movement to recycle, conserve, and be better ambassadors to our earth & environment. Back home, I see a half-hearted attempt by organizations, schools, government agencies and communities to "Go Green" but I'm quite confident now that I have been in CO 2 years in row(and especially at CSU) that folks here REALLY KNOW & DO what it takes to "BE GREEN." Here is a peek at a few efforts made on campus:
  • There are NO trays in the dining halls. The idea behind this is two-fold... 1) people will only take what food they can carry which limits food waste, 2) less trash in the garbage. Very smart. Very "green."

  • There are no disposable or to-go cups - again the idea is to limit trash in the garbage. Students and faculty bring their own travel mugs/bottles to refill. Very smart.

  • There are no bags for merchandise purchased in the bookstore - people are expected to carry or put in their backpacks what they bought. Makes sense, doesn't it?

  • There is a recyle can next to EVERY trash can around campus and in buildings. There is no excuse not to recycle. Zero excuses.

  • There are little subtle signs everywhere encouraging conservation. For example, in the dining hall today I saw 1) please limit your ice... the drinks are already cold and 2) please take what you can eat... there are starving children all over the world. Wow! I love it. So very true.

I don't know if being out here in a state that promotes the environment and many more people live a natural lifestyle OR maybe they are not afraid to just make the change and there are so many less people who are resistant to change... that the whole "Going Green" effort is not just encouraged - it is expected and it is now the norm. I have to tell you... it is refreshing and a nice change of pace.
