Emergency Response

As the nation’s leading scientific resource for oil spills, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been on the scene of the BP spill from the start, providing coordinated scientific weather and biological response services to federal, state and local organizations.

They have mobilized experts from across the agency to help contain the spreading oil spill and protect the Gulf of Mexico’s many marine mammals, sea turtles, fish, shellfish and other endangered marine life.  NOAA spill specialists are advising the U.S. Coast Guard on cleanup options as well as advising all affected federal, state and local partners on sensitive marine resources at risk in this area of the Gulf of Mexico.

It is very hard to watch the nightly news or read our local newspapers and realize that this environmental catrastrophe is sitting in our backyard.  It is hard to believe that it has been well over a month since the BP oil spill began in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico.  But what is shocking and so sad is that there is no definate and sure fix to this awful event and those who are most at risk are the marine life.  For the last few weeks, Florida has been "lucky" enough to not be directly impacted by the oil, but in reality... it is inevitable.  The oil spill is moving closer and closer to our shores and our communities.  The coastal areas of Louisiana have suffered heavily already and now the first signs of the oil are not far from Mobile Bay and the Pensacola coastline.

I could go on and on about BP beign the multi-billion dollar corporation it is... but it does no good at this point.  Yes, they are to blame and should rightfully take full responsibility for this horrific event... but what needs to continue to happen is the ongoing volunteer efforts by the organizations and individuals who are doing everything they can to help and find solutions to the already unbelievable problems with marine life and coastal communities.  Prayers are welcomed also.
