Seward cabin camping

Last week, we packed up 2 carloads of stuff and our peeps and headed south about 2.5 hours to Seward for a little relaxation and what I like to call, "cabin camping."  The last time we visited Seward was in the early fall last year on the tail end of one of Brian's TDYs and knew that this was a place we wanted to return to and enjoy again.

On the way down (thanks to many potty stops for Abby and getting more snacks for Marilyn), we captured lots of beautiful pictures of the snow-covered mountains along the Turnagain Arm.  We even saw some folks smelting (small fish).
We also stopped at Beluga Point to see if there were any whales, but no luck.  Instead, I captured this cute tourist picture of Grannie & Pop-Pop!
Once we arrived in Seward, it was apparent once again why so many people come south to enjoy this popular harbor town on the Kenai Peninsula.  It really is just so beautiful.
While everyone else relaxed (and napped in some cases) back at the cabin, I took the girls on a walk so I could enjoy the sunshine & fresh air... they were asleep in less than 5 minutes.

For this visit, we made reservations at the Seward Air Force Recreation Camp and rented 2 of their cabins.  Unlike the US Army Military Resort across the street (where we stayed last time), the rec camp is a little more rustic with cabins and RV camping spots.  It was perfect for us and just what we had hoped for.  Here is the smaller of the two cabins we had - the Kodiak.
Probably my favorite part of the whole cabin - nothing beats a porch swing for early morning coffee or late night relaxing.
I have to say that the amenities were far from rustic.  We were actually pretty spoiled if you want to call this camping.  The Kodiak cabin was about 700 square feet of coziness.  This is the cabin that Grannie & Pop-Pop stayed in.  This is also the cabin where Thomas & Abbigail enjoyed getting away from Mommy & Daddy.
See what I mean?
Several naps were taken here and even 1 sleep over night was thoroughly enjoyed by those 2 munchkins.  Abby still has stopped talking about the bunk beds -
"Thomas up high, Abby down low."
Again, I realize that this is a far cry from "real" camping... but we really enjoyed ourselves and all the luxuries of hotel life mixed with camping.
Across the driveway, was the 4-bedroom (yes, ridiculously big) cabin, Mt. Marathon, that we stayed in.  Unfortunately, I failed to take any pictures.  It wasn't quite as rustic and "cabin-like" as the Kodiak, but it was quite spacious for all of us!

This has to be another one of my favorite things...
There is something to be said for a campfire in June with sweatshirts & jeans on and a delicious beverage in your hand.

Oh, and marshmallow roasting on the fire!
Thomas was blown away when he learned how you cooked marshmallows on the open fire.
He was not sold on burnt ones like Daddy & Pop-Pop like them, but instead preferred his lightly golden brown...
... sandwiched between 2 graham crackers & a piece of chocolate!
Hmmmmm, yum!

I have come to realize that Abbigail is just like me when it comes to fires -
She gets lazy, completely relaxed and just wants to fall asleep!
What's a camping trip without a BBQ of hot dogs and hamburgers?
Notice too where everyone is sitting and eating:
Thomas & Abby are using the bench seat as their table and, because Mommy forgot a high chair for Marilyn, she is using Thomas' car booster seat strapped to a dining chair from the cabin.
Brilliant ideas Daddy & Grannie!
Sitting around the campfire doing a whole lot of nothing was really nice.
Telling spooky stories (which literally made Thomas jump out of his chair), catching up on missed time together and talking about the future was especially nice.
Really nice.
