Travel lessons learned

I'm no stranger to traveling with my kiddos, whether it is a short day trip or something a bit more extensive like road tripping across all of North America or flying solo with my 3 "littles" on a military Space-A flight to the Lower 48.  I've got the t-shirt for been there, done that!  But I would be remiss if I didn't say that I learn something new about traveling with kids with each and every excursion.  Let's review some recent lessons:
  • When purchasing a movie/TV options on the airplane, never purchase each child their own TV.  Save money and pair them up together. Don't forget to bring a splitter for the headphones.
  • NEVER purchase a movie/TV for yourself - you will be too busy taking care of your infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and even your big kiddos.  And your husband.
  • As another note...don't even bother getting yourself an adult beverage. Waste of money for the above mentioned reasons.
  • I'm a firm believer that if your kiddo can walk & talk, give them a little backpack filled with some of their toys and books for them to carry onto the plane.  Key phrase: for them to carry.
  • Best thing I think we have ever done with traveling with the kids is get them their own (cute) luggage. Oh, and we insist that they pull it when we are on the go.
  • Another important "bring-along" item are the kids' Camelbak water bottles. Easy for them to use, no mess, and we just fill up at a water fountain inside of security.
  • Do not, I repeat, do not let the kids pack their own carry-on backpacks.  You will end up with a gazillion Legos, two crayons, nothing to color on/in, one book, 7 baby dolls and an entire bag of hair bows.  Good thing I always repack their bags before we go.  And don't worry... I tuck all of their important things into their suitcases.
