16.5 month baby parts

Yesterday, we just so happened to have to go to the doctor's office, not for a well-baby visit, but rather to check on this cold & congestion that Marilyn just can't seem to shake.
She's fine & good spirits... just snotty & coughy.

Because she didn't have a 15 month well-baby visit, here are her latest stats:
weight - 23.15 lbs (43 percentile)
height - 31.5 in (63 percentile)
And just because she was too cute doing it, I thought I would share a video clip of Marilyn showing me all of her 16.5 month baby parts today.  Enjoy!

Gymnast in Action

Video Clip - Here's our budding gymnast in action this week.  Sorry for the wobbly parts... I had a toddler swinging from my leg while I tried to capture some of Abby's gymnastics moments.  Her instructor, Mr. Linn, is incredible with little kids & Abby hangs {no pun intended} on every word he says!  Enjoy!

Pumpkin Faces

You already know how much I like yummy tasting food & drinks made from pumpkins from last week's FNL - but I also think pumpkin faces are adorable too!  So this weekend, each of us decorated our own pumpkin face (Marilyn needed a little extra help) and we hung our first Halloween decorations.

Things you need:
paper plates
orange paint (washable)
paint brushes
pencil/crayon
black marker
scissors
black construction paper
tape

I had the kids each draw a "face" on the back of a paper plate.  Marilyn & I worked together on hers.  When they were done, I traced over their "face" with a black marker so that the face would still be visible once they painted it.
Next step came the paint - obviously their favorite part.  I had paint brushes for them to use, but Abby & Marilyn liked the idea of finger painting much better.  What every works, right?
While the plates were drying, I had the kids cut strips of black construction paper that would eventually be used for the background behind the cut out faces.  This was definitely good scissor practice for Abby who doesn't get to use them nearly as often as Thomas does.
After the pumpkin faces were dry, I cut out the eyes, noses, and mouths of each face and then taped small strips of black paper over the holes.
Finally...
our finished family of pumpkin faces!
In the end, I decided to personalize the plates because I know how excited the kids get to see THEIR letter to their name on their art.  Well, that and I thought it would be cute because the neighborhood kids also like to see who's face is whose.
We have some glowing ghosts that we will be crafting next weekend...
more Halloween decorations to come!

School Chaos... eliminated!

Over the last 6 weeks, backpacks have been laying around, paperwork has been piling up high & school folders are clogging up the counters.
I'm not sure why it has taken me this long to do something - other than constantly straightening up & moving the piles around - but I finally put my plan into action.
Of course, I had the help of my wonderful {and VERY patient} husband.

As always, I had to draw it out.

After stumbling across an old bulletin board in the back of the garage & then purchasing a few things at the craft store... I primed it all for a base coat & got it all ready for some color.
 Finished product.
And just a short time later...

... I had backpacks, folders, art work, pictures, weekly schedules & prized (A+) papers in place!
Bonus?  I also have a painted "M" and hook waiting for Marilyn when she starts school.
Can I just tell you the type of relief that has come over me now that I have this?
Seriously.
All that school chaos... eliminated!
I feel like all is right in the world again.  Finally.

Friday Night Leftovers (yummy pumpkins edition)

  • October = pumpkins.  I like pumpkins.  I especially like food & drink made with pumpkin - pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice latte, cupcakes & cream cheese frosting.  You get the idea.  So you can imagine my sheer delight when I saw pumpkin ice cream at the grocery store the other day.  Yummy.  But I'm happy to report that I exercised will power & left the store empty-handed.
  • Thomas & Abby had a successful dentist appointment this week - clean, clean, clean!
  • After the appointment, I guess it didn't occur to Thomas that he would be missing a short amount of school (1 hour & 15 min). That is until we got in the car to leave. I'm not sure if he thought it was hours, days or weeks of school, but the entire ride from the dentist office to his school he told me to step on the gas, go faster, he was going to miss so much work, everyone else would be ahead of him and {here's the kicker}.... there was NO POSSIBLE way he was going to be able to make all that work up. *Gasp*. All this from a kindergartener.
  • I'm happy to report that we had NO more snow since last weekend, everything that did "fly" melted by the next day & we have had highs in the mid-40s & low-50s.  See... I think Mother Nature was teasing us.
  • Unofficially, Marilyn has grown 2 inches in the last 2 months.  Holy Growth spurt!
  • This weekend involves a much-needed home project that will solve my "everything kindergarten & preschool related" overload problem.  I have all the materials & I'm ready to go!  Expect pictures next week!
  • the daylight hours are quickly dwindling.  Auuughh.
  • Abby loves going to school, especially when she gets to ride "her" school bus home on Tuesdays.
  • I've been blessed that Brian has taken leave every Friday for the last month to watch the girls while I go to my internship.  Not only does it save on childcare costs (because I don't have a paycheck) & I can also squeeze in an extra 2 hours per day to meet my requirement.  Bonus though?  Lots of awesome Daddy & Daughter time.
  • Thank goodness I'm beefing up on hours now because Brian is out the door for almost 2 months on a TDY soon.  I'll need every  bit of those hours to break even.
  • I'm hoping that this month we can wean Marilyn from her night-time bottle of milk - I'd love to be a bottle-free house & reclaim my counter space.
TGIF & enjoy your autumn weekend!

Religion: Where does it fit?

I've been extremely hesitant about discussing religion here on my blog for fear of reaction from readers, friends, my children, but most particularly... family.  But I figured there were worse things that I could talk about - besides this is a blog where I share MY thoughts, MY own family's life situations and I always feel better in the end once I get "whatever it is" off my shoulders.  So here it goes:

Religion is a hard topic for me to discuss openly and honestly, mostly because I don't have a clear cut idea of exactly how I want to practice religion or what I want to believe. I know that most of my family is currently cringing and shaking their heads in mortification, but this is my place to be honest.

In my early years, religion was a huge part of our lives, but I don't remember going to church once I got into late middle & early high school. Maybe I did, but I have zero memories of it. Religion has always been a piece of my life that I never clearly felt connected to. I think that the literal and scientific part of my mind always wanted more concrete answers than I was given.  Growing up, without having the maturity to articulate my confusion about religion, I disconnected myself. These days, I have found some of my own answers and some questions continue to linger. Additionally, as a history teacher, teaching about the major religions as part of the curriculum & their impact around the world has exposed me to several other "religious ideas" - which makes it all more unclear.  While I have become a spiritual adult, I don't know that I am necessarily a religious person. Herein is where I become reluctant to express myself for fear of being condemned, sounding ridiculous or naive, and/ or being ignorant.

This isn't a bashing session about religion, but there are things I just don't understand. Years ago I tried going to bible study classes and even got persuaded to join a youth group years earlier in college.  I  attempted to navigate the maze that I feel is religion & just try to figure it out. It didn't work. The more I read, the more confused I got. So, questions remain.

For starters, I never feel like I get anything out of going to church. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Maybe I'm at the wrong church, the wrong denomination. I just never come out feeling more enlightened, more engaged with religion, or more informed about how to move forward as a Godly woman. I just don't. I don't know what I'm missing.

I don't understand how something that has so much weight as eternal damnation can be so grey. Shouldn't it be more black and white? Why is it that each denomination reads the bible differently? Why do some denominations condemn other denominations? Why is one wrong and one right? Why all this room for interpretation? Don't wear mixed fibers if you're Jewish, wear them if you're not. Cover your head if you're Muslim, don't cover it if you're not.

Which brings me to the next point. There are thousands upon thousands of "rules" in the Bible. Why do some people follow some "rules" and not others? Why be selective? If people are supposed to be stoning those who commit adultery, why aren't they doing that? Too barbaric? But, isn't it a "law" or "rule"? Is it because you'd get arrested? Isn't God's law above man's law? Or is this one of those Old versus New Testament issues?

And prayer. I want to believe in the power of prayer. But, if everything is God's will, why does it matter if we pray? Hasn't He already decided what's going to happen? If we beg and plead, does that change anything?

I'm seriously confused.

Being confused and not certain about religion has certainly impacted our family.  Which is certainly a factor in why Brian & I chose NOT to get married in a church - we felt no connection to a certain church or denomination.  We have NOT had any of our 3 beautiful children baptized - we still feel no connection to any certain church or denomination and I'm not in favor of baptizing just to do it or because someone says its the right thing to do.

I just don't know where religion fits into our lives or in the lives of our children. I don't like the feeling that I'm being recruited whenever I try to explore my options. I also don't like or understand the feelings that come from going to a new church and being judged for not being a current church goer. It is the hypocrisy that I just don't understand. Don't give me the tsk tsk for not going to church when I'm clearly trying to find a place to go to church. This isn't one isolated event. And I don't like being told to "just believe." No, just explain it first. I cannot believe what I don't understand.

There you have it. I don't get it. I don't understand it. But let me make this clear. I always don't want to be convinced of the answers. Information, yes. Convincing, no. I want to do what is right for our family on a spiritual level, but how can I instill religion in my children when I can't find where it fits into my own life?

Betty Crocker & Joan Cleaver, I am not!

Let's all be real frank now... I've never been a great cook nor am I an excellent house keeper.

Don't get me wrong, I like to bake, make casseroles & cook simple{very simple} meals.  Again, nothing extraordinary, and certainly nothing on the scale of Betty Crocker (although I do use her red cookbook quite a lot).  I can assure you I really have no idea how to "just taste a recipe" & see what it is missing or create something from scratch & by my own imagination.  Ha!  That just isn't in my blood.

The same thing can be said about my keeping house.  The basics are always done - bed linens are changed weekly, clean bathroom towels are hung regularly, kitchen is wiped down after every use, laundry is done religiously, and order is kept in the house.  However, if Mrs. Cleaver was to walk into my house, she would most likely be appalled with the dust, the much-needed-to-be-vacuumed floors & the bathrooms that need some attention.

I admit it...
Betty Crocker & Joan Cleaver, I am not!

PS... I'm working on it though.  I hope that counts for something.

the Bug & a Tease

Friday Night it started to snow.  Saturday morning the neighborhood was covered with the white stuff.  Ironically, Friday night our house was stricken with "the bug" and things went downhill fast.  The only one who wasn't sick was Brian and he was left to take care of all of us, clean up after all of us, and do EVERYTHING that he could to get us all back to good health.  I'll spare you the gross & disgusting details.

On that note, I do find it funny that the icky bug that put us all out of commission on Saturday mirrored the weather that hung around all day long...
... and the sunshine that warmed the air today was indicative of how much better we all felt {which is much, much better}.
I'm thinking Mother Nature is just plain teasing us.
I think yesterday was a big wake-up call for us with winter knocking on our door.  So, in true backwards style, we started raking up the leaves & getting the garage ready for our winter gear.
You know what a big pile of leaves means?
 FUN!

And to my surprise, my kiddos and the some of the neighbors wanted to bag all the leaves.
OK... you don't have to ask twice. :)
Feeling much better, my left-handed artist made good use of the driveway for his canvas.
 His Big Monster Truck!
Daddy & Marilyn pulled our the rain/wind protector for the running stroller & stretched it out.
Now the girls & I are ready for some morning runs, despite the inclement weather.
And finally, as a constant {and beautiful} reminder that Mother Nature is sending winter our way soon...
... the snow is creeping down the mountains & heading our way!
